Vishing Attacks (Voice Phishing)

What is Vishing?

Vishing is phishing done via voice as to where the attackers will use phone calls, voicemails, or voice messages to impersonate a trusted personnel from a business (ie IT Support, Human Resources, Accounting, Payroll, and more) to manipulate you or your collogues into

  • Sharing Login Credentials or MFA Codes

  • Granting Access to Remote Desktops or Cloud Platforms

  • Installing or Approving Unauthorized Connected Applications

  • Performing Actions Under the Guise of a Fake "Urgent Request" Matter

These tactics are highly personalized and convincing, often using a spoofed phone number and fake names that could seem realistic.

What to Watch For:

Be alert to any unexpected, unwarranted communications that involves

  • Unexpected Support Calls From IT, Payroll, Human Resources, Accounting, and Other Departments

  • Requests For You to Approve Login Prompts or MFA Notifications That You Did Not Initiate

  • Instructions to Install a New "Security Tool" "Remote Desktop Agent" or "Cloud Connector"

  • Pressure Tactics Using Urgency, Such as "Your Account Will Be Disabled Unless ..."

  • Callers Knows Your Name, Title, and/or Department but the Call Seems Suspicious.

How to Protect Yourself
  • Ask the caller to confirm specific things that you would know and only they should now.

  • Verify the caller's identity in a way that you would be able to confirm. If not able to confirm, disconnect and then call back to the number that you should be able to reach them at. Do not always go by the number that is displayed on the caller id.

  • Nivek Solutions, with the approval of your company, will only use tools to access your information that has been originally communicated to you and your colleagues. 

  • Never share an MFA/2FA/TFA Codes, Passwords, or Approval Prompts. Not even to Nivek Solutions.

  • Never approve unsolicited application or system access requests.

  • If you receive or respond to a suspicious request, report it immediately to your supervisor and to Nivek Solutions.
