Taking Orders

Front of House (FOH) team members can take and enter customer orders using either a countertop or wall-mounted tablet-style POS device, or a handheld device while working on the restaurant floor. Once an order is entered into the POS system, it is immediately sent directly to the kitchen for preparation. This streamlined process helps improve efficiency, reduces delays, and minimizes the risk of FOH team members forgetting to enter orders or submitting multiple orders all at once.

Online Orders and Third-Party Delivery Services

Toast allows restaurants to integrate online ordering directly into their own website as well as connect seamlessly with third-party delivery services — reducing confusion, minimizing manual processes, and eliminating the need for extra equipment.

When customers visit a restaurant’s website, they can easily place orders for pickup or delivery. Pricing displayed online automatically syncs with the Toast POS system, ensuring accuracy and consistency. If delivery is selected, the order can be automatically routed and scheduled with the restaurant’s preferred delivery provider.

Toast also integrates with third-party delivery platforms, automatically updating menu pricing and changes across connected services. Orders placed through these platforms are sent directly to the kitchen for preparation, helping streamline operations, improve order accuracy, and simplify the fulfillment process.

Preparation and Serving

All orders — including online and third-party delivery orders — are sent directly to the kitchen in real time through the Toast system. This allows the Back of House (BOH) team to immediately view incoming orders and begin preparation according to the customer’s requests. By streamlining communication between ordering platforms and the kitchen, restaurants can improve efficiency, reduce delays, and maintain greater order accuracy.

Dine and Pay with Contactless Payments

Once the kitchen has completed the order and it has been delivered to the table, Front of House (FOH) team members can continue checking in with customers throughout their dining experience to see if additional items — such as drinks, appetizers, or desserts — are requested. Any additional orders can be entered directly into the handheld POS device while still at the table, allowing them to be sent immediately to the kitchen or bar for preparation.

When customers are ready to pay, the FOH team member can instantly provide the total using the handheld device and allow the customer to complete the payment themselves directly at the table. This tableside payment process improves convenience and efficiency while reducing the need for staff to handle customer credit cards, helping minimize the risk of misplaced cards or other security concerns.

Onboarding and Payroll

Setting up and managing new hires is simplified with Toast workforce management tools. Employees can clock in and out for each shift using any approved Toast device, allowing time records to sync automatically within the system. The platform can also track and organize employee tips, helping streamline payroll and reporting processes.

For employees who perform multiple roles within the restaurant, the system allows them to select their assigned role at the beginning of each shift. This helps accurately track hours worked by position and supports proper wage calculations based on different pay rates for each role.

When inventory orders are received, staff can simply enter invoice information into the system and allow Toast to automatically calculate menu and ingredient costs.
